Testing EdgeRank: Part One

Testing Facebook's EdgeRank Algorithim You might have seen an article (or two, or three) explaining that if you want your fans to see your Page on Facebook, (or on the flip-side of that, you, as a fan want to see more updates from a certain page) than you need to do one of the following two things:

  1. Hover over “Liked” on the page, and check “Get Notifications”.
  2. Go directly to the page, and like, share, and comment on their stuff!

Even I have shared that information, because I know that EdgeRank follows along with your activity on Facebook to determine what content to share with you on your Newsfeed, or not.

Well, last week, I realized I wasn’t seeing very much activity from a few pages that I knew I wanted to see content from. I knew they were posting, because I saw them share some of the same info on Twitter, but Lo and Behold! Nothing from them on my Newsfeed. Since I was noticing this as my page, I didn’t have the option to “Get Notifications”. This brought me to the other option of going directly to the pages I was missing updates from and “liking”, sharing, and commenting. It also led me to try this “experiment” to see if anything actually changed in EdgeRank.

Does EdgeRank Hide Page Updates from My Newfeed?

Yes. It does. I remember when I first heard of the changes to EdgeRank that created the frenzy about fans not seeing Page updates. I also remember I was seeing updates from these three particular pages at that point. I’m not even sure when I stopped seeing the updates.

How Can I Get My Fans to See My Page Updates?

Honestly, once EdgeRank has started “hiding” your posts from your fans, it will be up to your fans to actively start seeing your updates again. However, you can help prevent your Page updates from being hidden at all by posting engaging content and earning more likes, comments, and shares.

What I Did to Change EdgeRank

Now, let me remind you, I did this as my Facebook Page.

  • Visit the page directly. Everyday, give or two one or two days, I used the Facebook search bar and typed in the Pages’ names. At the very beginning of my experiment, I couldn’t even get the Pages in the search results until I had typed in the entire name of each Page. Even then, they were not the top results.
  • Like, Share, and Comment. Once I found the Page, I went through and “liked”, shared, and/or commented on recent, as well as past, posts that I had been missing. After the first two days, I only had to keep up with the recent posts, but always made sure to “like” them.

After a week, I can now do a search in the Facebook search bar, and the Pages I am looking for are showing up before I even finish the name, and they are showing up at the top of the results. I have even seen a post or two in my Newsfeed from one of the Pages.

Since I am seeing some results already, I wanted to make this post, but I will continue this “test” of EdgeRank to see if I can bring those Pages back into my Newsfeed, regularly. So Stay Tuned for Part Two where we find out if that happens!
